2008 Speakers

Mr. Glenn A. Acomb, ASLA, of the University Of Florida Department Of Landscape Architecture’s Program for Resource Efficient Communities, will discuss the requirements of the Green Building program, LEED & Sustainable Landscape Design.  He will briefly discuss the four elements of LEED certification and cover the landscape elements of a LEED certified site.

Dr. Lance Osborne of the University of Florida Mid- Florida Research and Education Center in Apopka will share detailed information on Chilli thrips, a new pest to Florida which has had an increasing affect on landscapes.  Dr. Osborne will discuss the significance of the pest and methods of control in addition to biological control of pests in the landscape.

Dr. Ed Gilman, University of Florida Environmental Horticulture Professor will share his research and expertise in the water requirements of trees and shrubs during establishment, a point of interest under drought conditions in particular.  Dr. Gilman will also share his latest research on the affect of planting depth on the health and longevity of trees and shrubs.

Dr. Tim Broschat, UF Palm Specialist of the Ft. Lauderdale Research and Education Center will discuss the unique fertilization requirements of palms, highlighting the components and characteristics of new fertilizer formulations being produced to the specifications of University of Florida research.  Many palms exhibit nutrient deficiency symptoms which may be confused for disease symptoms.

Dr. Monica Elliott, Professor of Plant Pathology from the UF Ft. Lauderdale Research and Education Center will speak on diseases in palms, particularly a new phytoplasma affecting the crown jewel of many landscapes, Canary Island Date Palms. Sampling techniques and treatment for phytoplasmas will also be discussed.

Dr. Jamie Ellis, University of Florida Associate Professor will discuss important information on Africanized Honey Bees.  These highly defensive bees have been found in the Tampa Bay area more than any other area of Florida.  Find out where you are likely to encounter them and how to defend yourself if attacked.
