2009 Speakers

Rob Northrop, Extension forester with the University of Florida IFAS Extension in Hillsborough County where he focuses on teaching and applied research into the changing composition, structure and ecological function of Tampa Bay’s urbanizing forest. For 22 years he worked as technical watershed forestry leader for the State of Maryland in the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Program, served as Director of Governor’s Executive Committee on Trees and Forests in Maryland for policy and programmatic initiatives concerning tree and forest conservation and taught wildlife management, ecosystem management and the human dimensions of wildlife at the University of Delaware.

Dr. Laurie Trenholm, Associate Professor and Urban Turfgrass Specialist, Environmental Horticulture Department. Laurie Trenholm received both her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of Florida, majoring in Turfgrass Science. Her Ph.D. is from the University of Georgia’s Crop and Soil Science Department in Turfgrass Physiology. She is currently an associate professor in the Environmental Horticulture Dept. at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Her appointment is 30% Research and 70% Extension. She has been active in development of the Green Industries Best Management Practices and oversees the statewide educational component of the BMP effort. Her research interests focus on nutrient leaching issues for verification of BMP interim measures and turfgrass stress physiology.

Mr. Glenn A. Acomb, ASLA, of the University Of Florida Department Of Landscape Architecture’s Program for Resource Efficient Communities, will discuss the requirements of the Green Building program, LEED & Sustainable Landscape Design.  He will briefly discuss the four elements of LEED certification and cover the landscape elements of a LEED certified site.

Robert Halman, County Extension Director and agricultural agent with the Collier County UF/ IFAS Extension Office. Before coming to Florida in 2005, Robert spent a 20 year tenured career with The University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Maryland Cooperative Extension as both an Extension Educator for Agriculture and Natural Resources and County Extension Director. Robert is a former Assistant Secretary of Marketing, Animal Industries and Consumer Services at the Maryland Department of Agriculture. In this position, Robert developed and implemented program budgets and supervised over 150 staff persons from 6 different program units.

Dr. Monica Elliottt, Professor of Plant Pathology from the UF Ft. Lauderdale Research and Education Center will speak on diseases in palms, particularly a new phytoplasma affecting the crown jewel of many landscapes, Canary Island Date Palms. Sampling techniques and treatment for phytoplasmas will also be discussed.

Dr. Ed Gilman
, University of Florida Environmental Horticulture Professor will share his research and expertise in the water requirements of trees and shrubs during establishment, a point of interest under drought conditions in particular.  Dr. Gilman will also share his latest research on the affect of planting depth on the health and longevity of trees and shrubs.

Registration Options

Registration for the Tree & Landscape Short Course Includes a BBQ or salad lunch option and free entrance to the Tampa Bay Wholesale Growers Spring Expo Trade Show.

There is a $5.00 parking fee at the fairgrounds.

Mail-In Registration is not available for the 2009 Tree and Landscape Short Course.  Everyone must register online or at the event.  Please note registration is $45 the day of the event.

Option 1: Register Online

Online registration is only available through February 18th at 11:59 PM. Online registration can only be done by credit card. You may register groups online. If online registration is closed, please see Option #2 below.

Option 2: Register at the Door

$45 for everyone. Registration begins at 7:30am. Please note credit cards can not be accepted on site.

Professionals $40 if pre-registered / $45 day of the show
IFAS employees (only those receiving a paycheck from IFAS or an Extension office) registration is complimentary - proceed through online registration.
